And now, for something completely different

Nepomuk actually does work on os x, it just doesn't start automatically. I better file a bug to get this started automatically. Had to run /Applications/KDE4/nepomukservicestub.app/Contents/MacOS/nepomukservicestub nepomukstorage myself. It was also nice enough to segfault after I launched dolphin so I could get my pics. I'd post them but I'm lazy.

The internet is cool. Thanks Daniel.

I'm a bundling fool too

Submitted by illogic-al on Sat, 11/22/2008 - 05:31

To bundle or not to bundle. My everlovin' question.
Amarok 2 RC1 will be released soon and we here on the mac team have been working at near break neck speed to bring our users the best possible all around experience. This starts from the moment the installer is downloaded, to the second the play button is press, to the instant the menus are navigated. We tried to get a lot of things right. We've largely failed, but as I've said before that's KDE's fault :-) There's a lot to be said that this works at all however, so kudos to all involved.

Did you know?

To Do (Help Welcomes)

* Compile a universal mysql package with the embedded library included. This fails in the examples directory on OS X.
* Generate separate ppc and intel packages for mysql and Amarok 2 if since the above doesn't work out. This way we get a working collection for the A2 binary release. [check!]

* Add the KDE4 portfiles to the macports repo, along with portfiles for those dependencies available on OS X. [check!]

* Finish the horrible excuse for a packaging tutorial currently on techbase.

ADD much? (or, how I compiled Opale on the Mac and looked stupid doing it)

So I'm cruisin' the planet looking for Alex's generous offer after NightRose pointed me to it, and my rss aggregator just happens to be on a post with some pretty pictures. I'm a sucker for pictures. They get me right there. Everytime. I won't comment on the UI in the pictures 'cause then I'd have to say something mean, and I'm doing so well today.

Oh Snap!

Just realized that I can go directly to a folder in the Finder by typing [Command]+[Shift]+G. This makes my file browsing experience complete. Now I can open hidden folders without needing to use open /path/to/hidden/.directory in Terminal.app.
Thanks to the Daring Fireball feed which took me to this little gem.

Anatomy of a standalone KDE Mac package

Submitted by illogic-al on Sun, 11/09/2008 - 20:18

Allow me to start off by stating that there is no such thing. The standalone package is a myth which we (or at least I) aspire to here in KDE/Mac land. Installation of KDE software is wholly geared towards non-proprietary *nix platforms. Whilst the I'm a PC crowd might be willing to overlook the inconvenience of installing 1 GB of tangentially related packages to get that one program they desire, members of the Cult-of-Mac are far less forgiving. This leaves us, i.e.

Oh no he didn't!

Oh yes. He did. I hear it's typical at these little shindigs to give a short intro, do a little song and dance, and then wink at the ladies and watch them swoon. My name is Orville Bennett, and I'm a PC.
No, not really. I'm actually the guy doing Mac packages until RangerRick returns to take his rightful place atop the disk imaging throne pleasecomebackPLEASE.

Testing out the blog module for drupal

So that's what this is all about. I could talk about the presidential election and all of that but everything I would have wanted to say has already left my mind. I'm just glad it's all over and Palin didn't win.

This also doubles as a test for the feed I'll link to the planet. Whenever I want to sydnicate I'll just make a blog post. Otherwise - Story, etc. ;-)

He Loves You Too Deux

When last we spoke I left on a rather uncertain note. But will it work... I asked. The immediate answer to that query was No. It will not. Being far too persistent with these things I kept on working until the answer was Yes. I have defeated you, vile beast. Yes, dramatic. I know.

Due to the overwhelmingly positive response towards the Amarok 2 packages for Leopard (10.5-intel) (i.e. no one was complaining about how much they sucked) I decided to take a stab at doing universal builds for Tiger (10.4). What would be good about these packages is that they would work for individuals with both powerpc and intel macs. They would also work for users with 10.4 or 10.5 installed, so being able to create them would be a win, win, win, win situation. Kill 4 birds with one stone if you will.

What do you do after working on something for 16 hours? Take a break. A long break. For 4 hours on Friday and 12 straight hours on Saturday I was working on getting my installer package ready. The installer package in question had precious paylod: a beta version of Amarok 2. I finally got it in a state I was comfortable with and released it into the wild. It took quite a bit of work, far more than expected, to get the installer working to my satisfaction. There were some things which I required it to do, or not do, before I was comfortable with releasing it; things which I list below.
